Mexico is threatening to sue Google for going with Gulf of America for users in the United States, noting that much of the body of water lies outside US maritime borders in regions controlled by Mexico and Cuba.
Apple Maps has also begun labeled it as the Gulf of America.

Meanwhile, another platform is pushing back in a unique way — by letting users name the gulf themselves.
While renaming geographical landmarks has long been a political flashpoint, this latest directive has sparked widespread debate about who controls digital mapping and the narratives they shape.
MapQuest, the self-proclaimed "OG of online mapping," has refused to adopt the White House’s mandated change and instead launched the "Gulf Map Generator."
The online tool at gulfof.mapquest.com allows users to input any name they choose for the body of water, effectively turning cartographic defiance into an interactive experience.
Since its launch last week, the "Gulf Map Generator" has quickly become a magnet for online trolls and political satire.
While Google and Apple have implemented the executive order’s naming convention, MapQuest is openly rejecting it with a firm stance:
"Our maps are like grandma’s Thanksgiving recipes — once they’re printed, they’re not changing," the company announced last month. "The Gulf of Mexico stays put on MapQuest."
